France to begin intercepting small boats in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and stating there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which ceased when the previous government official left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Now French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for comment.
