Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
