A recent study reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
